Chattanooga's utility built a $280 million smart grid, creating $2.7 billion in economic value. The local utility, called EPB of Chattanooga, spent $280 million to refurbish its power system with smart technologies to make a "smart grid." Trillions of tons of lightweight, energy-dense hydrogen gas may be hidden deep underground. Those natural reservoirs, known as geologic hydrogen, could be a fruitful carbon-free fuel source. Oil and gas giants BP and Chevron have joined a consortium to study geologic hydrogen. That's when an oil and gas company assessed a mine that had exploded in Mali and found it was full of hydrogen gas. In the US, two long stretches of this rock are a promising place to look for hydrogen reserves, and efforts are already underway.

October 1 has been the official kickoff date for the federal fiscal year since 1977. Lawmakers have passed at least one continuing resolution in all but three of the years in the nearly half-century since. Instead, they will wrap the spending bills into larger packages – frequently called an “omnibus” that is passed in December or later. In 1997, for instance, there was no CR, but the spending bills were all passed together as an omnibus. Don’t hold your breath for them to get the 2025 spending bills done on time.

If the US wants a soft landing, it needs to enact fiscal measures like student-loan forgiveness and tax cuts, Piper Sandler's chief global economist said. "There could easily be an additional 1.5% boost to GDP from fiscal stimulus this year," she wrote. AdvertisementIf the US economy wants to stick a soft landing, the government is going to have to loosen the purse strings. There are three times in history that the US has been able to nail a soft landing: 1967, 1985, and 1995. "Easing amid material fiscal stimulus risks repeating the Martin Fed's mistake...which set the stage for the 1970s' disastrous inflation cycle," she wrote.

At the current trajectory, that's set to weigh on the economy for the next decade or more. AdvertisementMillennials aren't having as many kids as previous generations, and that fact could end up dragging down economic growth for more than a decade. "What you're talking about is these birth rates dropping very, very low levels, which over the course of time has huge impacts on the economy," Pomeroy said. The impact of millennials having fewer kids will likely be worse than the impact of aging boomers — and the most dire consequences could come 10-15 years from now, Pomeroy estimated. The most important thing to encourage people to have more kids might be a cultural shift in how we talk about children, Buchholz says.

Electric heat pumps are also more efficient at heating and cooling homes than systems powered by oil and propane. Heat pumps move hot and cold air from indoors to outdoors, rather than burn fuel, and can save the average US homeowner an estimated $500 a year. To this day, those two rules might be the best parenting advice I have ever received, delivered to me by a 5-year-old, passed down through at least three generations of her family. While not "expert," advice from family or friends offers something intangible and underestimated: it naturally comes from a place of vested interest in both parent and child. AdvertisementFor instance, when a parenting expert posts a reel detailing how to de-escalate a tantrum, she may be sitting in a cheerfully lit, clean space with no background noise. Whereas family members or close friends may try to ease FUD, parenting experts may try to capitalize on it. With this in mind we may do well to take expert parenting advice the way we should take all advice, with a grain of salt and a healthy dose of skepticism about the motivations of the person doling it out.

In December, a jury ordered Rudy Giuliani to pay $148 million for defaming election workers. AdvertisementThese extraordinary judgments are the result of a combination of factors, but social media plays a major role, legal experts said. While in the past, high-profile figures may have been less willing to make defamatory statements, social media can actually provide an incentive for them to do so. Jones also stood to gain from spreading conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook shooting, according to Mattei. Lieb added it's not that any statement made on social media will automatically carry major consequences, but that the size of the person's audience makes a huge difference.

Billionaires are actually great for the economy, a director at the American Enterprise Institute argues. That's because billionaire innovators produce trillions of dollars of value for the US. The center-right think tank's Michael Strain argues that billionaires produce many times their net worth in value for the economy through their innovations. I sometimes struggle to follow the advice I give as a pediatrician about how to best raise kids. She's been doing this for days — and I don't feel the least bit guilty. All it's really going to do is make parents feel even more like they're not measuring up. And if I can't follow half the advice I'm supposed to give, where does that leave all the other parents? Let your kids know ahead of time which adults will take them to school and pick them up.

Officials estimate the hydrogen production credits can deliver $140 billion and 700,000 jobs by 2030. Administration officials estimate the hydrogen production credits will deliver $140 billion in revenue and 700,000 jobs by 2030 — and help the US produce 50 million metric tons of hydrogen by 2050. Firms that produce hydrogen using fossil fuels get less. The Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association includes more than 100 members involved in hydrogen production, distribution and use, including vehicle manufacturers, industrial gas companies, renewable developers and nuclear plant operators. Some of the money will flow to regional networks, or "hubs," of hydrogen producers, consumers and infrastructure that the Biden administration is also trying to kickstart with a $7 billion program.
